Seniornet is a chat room for the 50+ computer user. We provide a clean and safe environment in the form of a moderated chat room. Pornography and obscenities will not be allowed.
Our primary goal is to assist the mature computer user in getting the maximum amount of pleasure from the electronic medium. If you have questions, please ask. If we don't have an answer immediately, we can find an answer shortly.
The Seniornet Chatroom has been established by Barry Stuck (AKA: BUG), who teaches computer use at the Senior Center of Invercargill, New Zealand. Among our members we have chums from all around the world: New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada, South America and the United States.
Seniornet is a moderated chat room. This means selected members have the ability to gag, boot, and/or ban any user who creates a disturbance or behaves in a particularly annoying manner. You'll recognize our moderators by the "Helping Hand" [
] icon next to their name. Most of our moderators have been with Seniornet many years and are well qualified to give you assistance.
If you would like to visit our chat room, you must first download and install the Filetopia File Sharing and Chat Program. For a free download, click HERE to download the four files needed. They are: FTop3.exe; MSAgent.exe; TV_enua.exe; and sounds.zip. If your computer uses the Win XP operating system, you will also need SPCHAPI.EXE, click HERE!
The Filetopia Chat Program allows you to share files, images, text, etc., with users all around the world. It includes a robot voice which will read the chat text aloud, a definite plus for those with less than perfect eyesight. It also has live voice capability, so you can speak to and hear your chat buddies.
You can also insert sounds (called WAVs) into your chat, but the files must be saved in your Sounds Folder before they can work. For more information, and to collect over 400 WAV files, please click HERE. You will find instructions how to download and use WAV files in Filetopia.
Once you have your program installed, you can click on this link CHAT to go directly to the Seniornet Chatroom. If you require further assistance, be sure to ask, we are here to help you.
But what if you can't install the program and log into Seniornet? No problem, just click on any of the links below (all members of Seniornet) and send an email to ask for help.
If you'd like to have a good time, join us each Monday evening at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time, 9:00 p.m. Central Time, or 0200 GMT Tuesday if you are outside the Continental U.S. Every Monday is Joke Night! Anyone may tell a joke and the other users of Seniornet will rate it from 1 (low) to 10 (high). The top three scoring jokes will be posted on BUG's Home Page. Check out some previous winners by clicking on the links at the bottom of the page. Remember, all jokes must be in good taste, something you would not mind sharing with your grandchildren.
