The Flight

She glided through the blue sky catching the air currants. This was a contest and she felt as if her life depended on winning.

The other gliders were all around her, to the left, to the right and behind her. They were all of one mind. Catch the one in front.

She caught a good current and flew away from them holding her lead. Now they were all on her tail. She couldn’t let them overtake her or even get close to her.

She managed to fly up, ever upward and then on and on, as fast as she could move. It was difficult, as she knew they were all trying to catch up with her. She couldn’t let that happen.

She didn’t know how fast she was moving, but she still managed to stay in the forefront.

Some of them were larger than she seemed to be and when they came closer to her, they loomed twice and three times the size they actually were.

She was very cautious and knew she must win this contest above all costs.

It seemed the other gliders were actually playing games with her. Maybe trying to put a scare into her and making her lose her concentration and her place in the front. She persevered, but the others kept creeping up on her.

She saw mountains ahead and they were covered with trees. She needed to reach them and she might break away from the others around her. She knew this was a big chance to take, but kept on towards her goal, heading in the direction she planned for herself.

She needed to win this contest. It was important to her and others who relied on her.

She flew as she had never flown before. She knew in her heart she would win this race. She just had to, even though she was getting somewhat tired from the exertion and concentration of the flight. How much longer could she keep the lead? She was worried about this situation, but kept on undaunted. The mountains and trees were coming ever closer. She thought, ‘A little farther and then I will be home free.’

Glancing around brought a slight gasp from her. She might not make it after all. They were flying faster, intent on not letting her reach the area she needed to obtain. She didn’t know what she was going to do. She kept thinking she had to make this win! Faster, faster, she flew. “I’m almost there. If I can hang on a couple of more minutes, I know I will make it.”

She was so tired, but she must be like the little engine who kept saying to himself, “I think I can. I think I can.” Closer and closer she flew to her objective.

There were the trees on the side of the mountain in front of her. As she flew down into one, she gave a sigh. She was safe. They wouldn’t catch her now. Like the little engine, she thought, “I knew I could. I knew I could.”

What would you have done if you were out for a good time and you were a lone bird on the wing with other birds trying to catch and maim you?
