Write a story about a date (social
encounter), set in a cemetery. Begin with "On my 100th
birthday..." and include the phrase "bullet hole."
“On my 100th birthday,” Becky told her 75-year-old daughter, “I finally got the last word with your father.”
“How’d you manage that? Seeing how he went and got himself killed more than 65 years ago in that ridiculous war. Besides, after all that time, why would you want too?”
“It’s sort of a strange story. On our wedding day, we promised each other that we would celebrate my 100th birthday no matter where we were at the time.”
“So how’d you manage it?”
“I went to the cemetery and stood over his grave and asked him if he was there and kept his promise. When I got no answer, I asked again, ‘Bruce, are you here?’ That was two, so when I asked the third time and got no response, I pulled his old Colt 45 and fired one shot. After the chips and slivers of granite fell to the ground, I walked up and examined the bullet hole in the center of his headstone and said, “That’s what you get for standing me up.”
