My interests include working with the computer, creating web pages for myself and friends, and when I can find the time, I am also an aspiring writer of both fiction and non-fiction. For three years, I served as president of The Oasis Writers' Guild, of Pahrump, NV. The guild publishes a print magazine 4 times each year. We also maintain an online publication called The Pseudonym.
I bought my first home computer in 1978, long before there were Windows or an Internet. Because you could not buy software off the shelf in those days, every hobbyist had to learn to write programs in BASIC. Over the years, BASIC has gone through several evolutions, but it is still easy for a beginner to use, and fun to write programs or applications to solve problems with these "magic boxes."
The current version I am using is Just Basic v1.01. It allows you to easily write programs which can be run in the Windows environment instead of DOS, and to even create the "graphic user interface" most users are accustomed to. For more information, go to The Just Basic Home Page or The Just Basic Users Group, where hobbyists at all experience levels can share tips and tricks or ask questions about computer programming.
Another topic that gives me lots of pleasure is chatting with my chums from SENIORNET using the Filetopia chat and filesharing program. Seniornet is a chatroom for us 'mature puter users,' and gives those just learning about computers for the first time a chance to learn from users who have had more experience.
Filetopia allows you to chat in real-time with friends from all over the world. It has a robot voice to read the chat-text aloud in case your eyesight 'ain't what it used to be.' If you would like to install Filetopia on your computer click on the padlock, to the right, to download the four essential files. Once you have installed FTop20.exe, MSagent.exe, TV_enua.exe, and Sounds.zip, you can click HERE to join my friends and I.
After you have downloaded FILETOPIA, you may want to stock up on additional WAV files that you can use while in the chat room. I have posted over 400 WAV files on a web page with instructions how to download and use them. Just click on this link to go to that page, but don't forget to come back here! Click here!
What ever you do, remember your computer can educate you, provide instant communication between friends and family, and entertain you if only you will learn how to make it sit up and beg. If you happen to be chatting with someone who needs a little help, don't be impatient or short with them. He or she might be your elected representative in Congress. Just because a person has won a popularity contest does not automatically confer wisdom upon them.
I hope to see you around the web some time!
